Ok…so if you follow me on Instagram, you will remember my post about perfectly flat bra cups. In that post, I mentioned that I was going to show you all how I made a bustier top. Well…I HATE it! Omg! I was a bit apprehensive about it to begin with, but my fears were realized right before sewing the cups. Ugh! Well…let’s get into this embarrassment.

I had a pair of 42 x 30 denim jeans that I got from a thrift store. I thought they would be perfect for making a top. When I laid eyes on the Rose Cafe Bustier Dress pattern from Daria Patternmaking, I just knew it would be perfect! The pattern is for a dress, but I just wanted the top piece, so I hacked it to make it longer.

Before I go on, I just want to say that although I hate how the bustier turned out, I absolutely LOVE this pattern. It is so easy to follow!

This is precisely the point where I realized that I hated it, but I thought to myself, “let’s just continue and see”. Yeah. No. But, as you can see, the pattern is beautiful.

1st fail: The thread color. I don’t know what made me think that out of a pack of 6 denim thread colors (linked below), I should choose the gold one. What a fail!

2nd fail: The fact that I didn’t align the seams of the cup and the bustier. This was a silly sewing mistake on my part, but I feel like I wouldn’t have hated it as much if I had used blue thread.

3rd fail: This is where it went from bad to worse. I didn’t have an invisible zipper that was long enough, so I decided I’d add a pink separating zipper. Pink ya’ll. Freaking pink. Shakes head in utter disgust. The pattern describes how to line the garment, but I decided against it and just hemmed the bottom and top. This is also where I loved the pattern. In other bustiers that I’ve made, the top hem has never been as neat. This one came out stellar!

Like…how did I not stop myself at this point?!

This should have been another sign to quit - this is the 3rd heavy duty needle that I broke. I did end up switching to just a jeans needle (linked below) and it worked like a charm for this project.

So here’s the final look! Again, I can’t rave enough about the pattern. If you are thinking about making a bustier…THIS IS THE ONE! She also has a video tutorial that’s perfect for beginners. As much as I Ioved making this, the design was a fail on my part. I should’ve thought this out more! Oh well, I’ll try again some other time and keep you guys posted.
